Climate science — and why the world won't listen

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued the executive summary of its latest report on global warming on Sept. 26. It stated, among other things, that hundreds of scientists are more certain than ever that the planet is warming up and that humanity’s ever-growing use of fossil fuels is the cause. The report said its authors are 95 percent certain that this is so (up from 90 percent certainty in a similar conclusion in the IPCC’s 2007 report).

Dynamics of a River Landscape: The Impact of Water, Land & City on The Viennese Danube

According to the findings of an interdisciplinary research project of the Austrian Science Fund FWF, the transformation of the Viennese Danube was shaped by natural processes in the river, flooding, transport, human settlements, war and excrement. The project analysed the environmental history, social ecology and hydromorphology of the river over four centuries. The project team reconstructed the transformation from a dynamic river landscape into a regulated channelin detail. To this end, new, and by now, internationally recognized methods were developed and a prestigious journal dedicated a special issue to the project findings.

Archaeologists uncover oldest mine in the Americas

Archaeologists have discovered a 12,000-year-old iron oxide mine in Chile that marks the oldest evidence of organized mining ever found in the Americas, according to a report in the June issue of Current Anthropology. A team of researchers led by Diego Salazar of the Universidad de Chile found the 40-meter trench near the coastal town of Taltal in northern Chile. It was dug by the Huentelauquen people—the first settlers in the region—who used iron oxide as pigment for painted stone and bone instruments, and probably also for clothing and body paint, the researchers say.

    Bechar Basin, Algeria

Part of Bechar Basin, Algeria is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 15 crewmember on the International Space Station. The Bechar Basin of northwestern Algeria reaches depths of 8,000 meters, and is a producing hydrocarbon region. According to scientists, the basin was formed as Paleozoic (approximately 250-540 million years old) sedimentary layers were folded and faulted during much later collision of the continents of Africa and Europe during the Tertiary Period (approximately 2-65 million years ago). Hydrocarbon reservoirs are located within clastic (formed of variably-sized pieces of pre-existing rock) sedimentary rocks and fossilized coral reefs. Dark brown to tan folded ridges of these Paleozoic sedimentary layers extend across this view from top to bottom. Sand dunes are visible to the north, south, and west of the city of Bechar (gray-blue region to the left of the fold ridges) at center. Wadis (river channels) are dry most of the year in the arid climate of the region. Unconsolidated (loose) sands left in the channels by intermittent streams are transported by surface winds after the water is gone. This leads to the formation of individual dunes and larger dune fields (both bright tan in color) along the wadi courses, which also concentrate sands from other sources; dune fields are visible to the south of Bechar and at lower right. The oblique -- looking at an angle from the International Space Station, versus looking straight down - view of this photo accentuates cliff and dune shadows, providing a sense of the topography of the region.

Biotechnology in the restoration of extinct animal species. An analysis of genomic and mitochondrial DNA of aurochs

The aurochs is a species similar to the African Buffalo, Water Buffalo, Muskox, Yak, Wisent or Bison. According to J. Rostafiński “aurochs was similar to an ox from the Podolia region and the Hungarian Ox and also to Andalusian Bulls” (Ossendowski, 1936). The description of the species may be deduced from several sources. The oldest sources are the pictures, reliefs and cave paintings dating back to about 17,000 (and more) years ago. The other sources are: Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, or Roman descriptions originating during the time of the conquests of Gaul and Germania, Germanic sagas and songs (written in the runic alphabet), and more modern reports, mainly German and Swiss, which describe aurochs in the Baltic territory including Poland, as well as in Moldova. The most reliable are Polish descriptions, especially those from the 15--17th centuries. The most limited, although also the most objective source, are the remains of those animals found in Europe, Africa and Asia. Although the found remains allow us to precisely establish certain features of the aurochs, nothing may be concluded about its external appearance and the features are dependent on the precision of dating.

Named after Archbishop Maximilian Vrhovac, who in 1774 established a small public garden in the southwestern corner of today’s park, Maksimir owes much to his successors Aleksandar Alagović and Juraj Haulik, who imported the idea of the landscaped country park from England. It’s perfect for aimless strolling, with the straight-as-an-arrow, tree-lined avenues at its southwestern end giving way to more densely forested areas in its northern reaches. As well as five lakes, the park is dotted with follies, including a mock Swiss chalet (Švicarska kuća) and a recently spruced-up belvedere (vidikovac), now housing a café which gets mobbed on fine Sunday afternoons.

"Once upon a time, there was the Earth, the everlasting basis of everything, and Love, the most beautiful being among the immortal Gods and humans, the one who touches the soul and makes us forget our worries. First of all the Earth bore the Sky, full of stars, which was equal with her, and then she fell in love with him, to create the whole world."

    The Bio-Bio River Case, Chile

The Bio-Bio river flows from the Cordillera of the Andes all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Over one million people use the resources of the Bio-Bio for drinking and irrigation water, recreation, and fisheries. ENDESA, the largest private company in Chile, is planning to construct six hydroelectric dams on the Bio-Bio. The first of these, Pangue, is already 70% completed. ENDESA now says it will move ahead with construction of the largest of the dams, called Ralco. Ralco would be a 155 meter-high dam with a 3,400 hectare reservoir, which would displace 700 Pehuenche Indians. The upper Bio-Bio where the Ralco dam is planned, is home to the Pehuenche group of the Mapuche Indians, the last group of Mapuche who continue their traditional lifestyle. The dam would flood over 70 km of the river valley, inundating the richly diverse forest and its wildlife. Environmental and Indigenous rights groups oppose the project not only because of the wide scale destruction it would cause, but also because projections of Chile's future energy requirements indicate that the energy it would produce will not be needed. Critics of Ralco say that construction would violate the new Chilean Environmental and Indigenous Peoples Laws and prior agreements between ENDESA and the World Bank. The Pehuenche of Chile and environmentalists are struggling against a dam project on the Bio-Bio river that will force the Pehuenche off their ancestral land and flood 9,000 acres of farmland and rare temperate rainforest in Southern Chile. On June 6, 1997 the $600 million Ralco dam project was approved by the Chilean government's environmental office. ENDESA, the private public utility company claims that this dam, and 10 more dams its size between now and 2013 are needed to satisfy the energy demands of the Chilean economy.

Inside the meat lab: the future of food

The future feast is laid out around a cool white room at Eindhoven's University of Technology . There is a steak tartare of in-vitro beef fibre, wittily knitted into the word "meat". There are "fruit-meat" amuse-gueules. The green- and pink-striped sushi comes from a genetically modified vegetarian fish called the biccio that, usefully, has green- and pink-striped flesh. To wash this down, there's a programmable red wine: with a microwave pulse you can turn it into anything from Montepulciano to a Syrah. For the kids, there are sweet fried crickets, programmable colas and "magic meatballs". These are made from animal-friendly artificial meat grown from stem cells: packed with Omega 3 and vitamins, they "crackle in your mouth". Yum.

    Amazon River Dolphins, Inia geoffrensis

Amazon riverdolphins, Inia geoffrensis (Blainville, 1817), aka boutu, boto and bufeo, are one of the few species of fresh water dolphins and the most well-known river dolphin. They are a medium size dolphin with long beaks, a stocky body, and prominent forehead. Males measure about 2.5 m in length; females average 1.8 m with a maximum length of2.4 m. Amazon river dolphins weight up to 160 kg. They have long beaks with 24-34 conical and molar-like teeth. The conical teeth in the front of the mouth are used for holding prey, the molars in the rear of the mouth are used to grind food before swallowing. A characteristic unique to theAmazon river dolphin is stiff hairs on the beak; the hairs are a sensory organ that help sense prey in muddy river bottoms.

    Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest, also known as Amazonia, is one of the world's greatest natural resources. Because its vegetation continuously recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen, it has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet". About 20% of earth's oxygen is produced by the Amazon rainforest.

Drug Delivery Mediated by Multifunctional Dendritic Polymers

Design and synthesis of multifunctional dendritic polymers aiming at the development of effective Drug Delivery Systems is described. Commercially available dendritic polymers were functionalized for obtaining Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) of low toxicity coupled with high loading capacity, targeting ability to specific cells and transport through their membranes. This was achieved by functionalizing the surface of dendritic polymers with targeting ligands which induce specificity to certain cells, with polyethylene glycol chains (PEG chains) which enhance their water solubility and stability in biological milieu and therefore result in prolonged circulation. Furthermore, molecular transporters facilitate transport through cell membranes while fluorescence probes are introduced to determine their intracellular localization. Crucial feature of these DDS is multi-valency which considerably enhances their binding strength to complementary cell receptors. Controlled and/or triggered release coupled with high loading of drugs are also advantageous properties of DDS. These properties when simultaneously fulfilled upgrade the potential and effectiveness of drugs.

    Mechanisms of insecticide resistance

Since the beginning of the miraculous insecticide era, around 1930, efforts focused on the production of species specific compounds with the least possible environmental impact. However, the widespread and persistent use of any insecticide will inevitably lead to the development of resistance. The vast majority of modern insecticides target the insect’s nervous system, either at the level of the cell’s axon or at the synapse.
