St Brigids embraces sustainable living

St Brigid’s College, Callan has won funding to develop initiatives to support a more sustainable (and bio diverse) environment.

Sponsoring the initiative is the Susliving Organisation based in Clonmel. They invite schools to think of environmental projects that will promote sustainable living in areas such as food production, renewable energy, energy saving, and good building practice, and biodiversity. They are a not for profit group of individuals offering their skills and expertise in a practical way.

They offer an online invitation only forum composed of horticultural experts, builders, engineers, IT experts, to facilitate an ideal platform of support where ideas can flourish and be supported; practical workshops where skills can be shared and developed to support school project; and economic support as required.

Pioneering the scheme are the Horticulture and Environmental studies groups in fourth year and CSPE classes in the Junior Cycle.

The school has been abuzz with many projects to promote biodiversity, including planting seeds workshops, an apple tree ceremony, initiation and participation in school poster competition, open entry in environmental essay writing competition, organisation of tree planting in the school grounds including an orchard garden, research on and creation of habitats for birds, bats and insects, planting raised beds, the development of a spring garden, participation in workshops and experiments on renewable energy sources, problems with fossil fuels, study of fuel efficient wood burners/horticulture- identification of soil types/planting in raised beds/composting/handling and rearing chickens/building materials, experiments with insulating materials/practical exploration of traditional building methods.

The programme will run for five years.
