The National Gallery of Armenia which is situated in the main and the most beautiful square of the capital, Republic square, was founded in 1921 first as the Fine Arts section of the State Museum of Armenia. Today it is a prominent Art Museum not only inArmeniabut also in the region. Apart from the main museum there also function 12 branches of the Gallery in Yerevanand the provinces.
In the essence and variety of the collections the Gallery is a universal museum. Here are preserved art-works of Armenia and Worldwide painting, more than 25 thousand invaluable pieces of sculpture, drawing and decorative applied-art, obtained in the course of years and decades not only by the State but also donated to the Museum but the collectors and art-lovers.
The collection of Armenian art is distinguished by exclusive richness and completeness. Passing through the halls and the floors the visitor associated with the creative genius of the ancient country and its people, gets acquainted with the best exhibits of the great culture from ancient time till nowadays. In the Museum there are preserved the documental copies of Armenian frescoes, the significant collection of the religious paintings, masterpieces of almost all Armenian great masters of 19-20th centuries such as Hakob Hovnatanyan, Hovhaness Aivazovsky, Vardges Surenyants, Martiros Srayan, Hakob Kojoyan, Hakob Gyurjyan, Vahram Gayfejyan, Georgi Yakulov, Sedrak Arakelyan, Edgar Chahine, Ervand Kochar, Harutyun Galents, Garzou and others.
Rich and varied the foreign art department of the Gallery. Here one can see many of exhibits of Western and Eastern countries which give the visitor an opportunity to get a complete idea of the history of World Art of its main trends and ages.Egypt,Greece,China, Indian,Iran,Japanare presented by the valuable exhibits specific to these cultures. The Italian, Dutch, German, Flemish and French section include a great number of works by well-known masters ( Donatello, Tintoretto, Albrecht Durer, Yan Van Goyen, Pieter Claesz, Rembrandt, Teodor Rousseau, Gustav Courbet, Eugene Boudin, Louis Anquetin and others).
The collection of the Russian Art is distinguished by its quality and quantity of masterpieces beginning with icons up to the multicontent and various styles of the 20th century painting. Feodor Rokotov, Ilya Repin, Mikhail Vrubel, Natalya Goncharova, Pavel Kuznetsov, Vassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Pavel Filonov, Robert Falk are presented by highly artistic works which could bring fame to any museum.
Besides continuously renovated main exposition there are being organized temporary exhibitions in the Gallery where are being presented not only works from storerooms but also personal exhibitions of contemporary artists.
